At the Mission Home in Guam - October 16, 2011
Here we are with President and Sister Mecham in the Mission Home. It is on a hill in Guam in a nice neighborhood. The Church doesn't do it half way with mission homes if this is an example of what they are all like. We just finished Sunday dinner which I enjoyed helping Sister Mecham get ready. We ate around the table with Pres. and Sister and with 2 young Elders who are leaders in the missionary district in Guam. President Mecham asked the Elders to tell us about what we can expect in missionary work in Saipan and in Micronesia in general. We learned alot about the great members of the Church here and about the people who are trying to accept the Gospel against great odds...like Word of Wisdom problems, family challenges, and many people not wanting to bother with the great idea of marriage. The Elders also said many people say, "oh, I believe what you are saying about following Jesus's example of baptism; I know it is true, but I was already baptized when I was a baby and I don't want to do it again." However, we felt the enthusisam for the work in what we are beginning to see, is a great part of the world for the Church to grow in.
We saw strong, faithful people in Church today as we attended the ward in Guam. We met the Stake President who gave us a formal calling to be the Institue Teachers in Saipan. We will meet people who will help us get that in place when we fly to Saipan at 1:40 tomorrow (Monday - Oct 17). The Mission President has told us about the other things that we can and should do in Saipan and we are excited about these things.
The first thing to do tomorrow in Saipan however will be to get set up in the apartment and buy needed things for the kitchen. We look forward to getting things organized in this island that has not had senior couples. It sounds like we will be needed there and we look forward to that!
